Madison, WI 53703
Free and open to the public
Schedule
Zine Fair | 12 to 6PM
Co-op Style Distribution with Your Friends Workshop | 1 PM
In recent years, periodical distributors who have been using the same model for years have shriveled up and gone bankrupt, killing dozens of publications. Book distributors are virtually now all owned by Perseus and run under one corporate umbrella. This workshop will teach you how to setup your own co-op distribution model with similarly-minded publications to fill this niche. Skills and techniques apply to smallest scale publications. D-I-Y!
Zines as Educational Tools for and With Prisoners Workshop | 3 PM
Anthony Rayson, who runs the South Chicago ABC Zine Distro, will examine why the educational system has failed so many young people who drop out of school at high rates and often end up in prison. Enter the in-your-face reality check zines written by and for prisoners. Anthony will explain why zines are capable of capturing the attention of such "lost" people, give some examples and demonstrate why the well-written explosive tracts of today are essential in developing a real and grounded culture of resistance. Anthony considers himself a free school anarchist educator who uses the medium of cut and paste zines exclusively. He also has been heavily involved in local and national grassroots organizing. Members from the Wisconsin Books to Prisoners Project will help facilitate the workshop.
Art As Activism Workshop | 4 PM
Susan Simensky Bietila’s presentation "Art As Activism" is autobiographical - 40 years of making art for alternative press against the Vietnam War and 2nd Wave Feminism in the late 1960s, Street Theatre against US wars in Central America in the 1980s, and art made for the movement against the Crandon mine -- a history of radical activism through art. Media include pen and ink, scratchboard, papier mache, photo collage. She co-curated Drawing Resistance - a d.i.y. Traveling Art Show 2001-2005, and publishes stories in World War 3 - Illustrated magazine. She has lived in Milwaukee for over 20 years. Her work is serious and funny at the same time.
One Page Zines | 5 PM
How do you make a zine by using only one side of a sheet of paper? Come to this talk led by John from The Muse, the News, & the Noose zine to learn how to do so. Stop by with questions, comments, and insights. You may know more than those around you, so come share with us your ideas.
